Juls Bindi and I were out in Miami with Chris Demorro and DJ Diplo’s artist Andre Jones custom-made electric bikes.

As a journalist and podcast host, one of the best things is to visit. We get new cars before many people, we get racetracks and auto shows before most of the public, but the best, and best part is to reach out to the people who really make the electric car revolution possible. One of them is my new friend Juls Bindi, the founder of ZuGo Bike, an electric bike brand.

The Rhino electric bicycle was born in the desert of Burning Man. If you are not familiar with Burning Man, it is a very expressive music festival featuring wild costumes, art installations and wild rides that are most relevant to us. It looks a bit like this...

… Juls is a "burner". Not only did she meet her husband at Burning man, but she also had the vision to start ZuGo Bike. "We want a way to bypass Burning Man," she told me in Los Angeles (I explained it a bit). "We need something sturdy enough to handle the extreme conditions there, but something comfortable... and one more thing: you have to be able to actually step on it."

What Juls is saying here is sometimes self-evident in high-power electric bike models, which is the fact that you can't really step on them. Bicycles like the 50-mile-per-hour Xion or even the super cute Segway C80 certainly have pedals. They can push the bike forward a little bit, but they are either awkwardly positioned or have awkward gears, and mainly To circumvent motorcycle laws instead of serving as proper bicycle equipment. Juls hopes that her electric bicycle can be ridden and fully functional regardless of the battery charge status.

"You can actually step on our bikes," Juls said. "We use a larger ring gear to make Rhino easier to step on, and it has a bicycle gear lever on the right handlebar, just where you want it."

That line is worth paying attention to. Most electric bike models I have ridden have a motorcycle-style throttle on the right grip, which you can twist to engage the electric motor. On ZuGo Rhino, the throttle is activated by the thumb on the left. I found it to be an experience of loving it or leaving it, but it is easy to cycle through various pedal assist modes, and I would never use it anyway, unless on a steeper slope than I have ridden.

Speaking of things I don't ride, ZuGo Bike showed some very impressive one-off customizations at the Electrify Expo in Miami and Austin. I have never ridden them before-because they are simply amazing. The first is Diplo's personal "tiger" bike, and the second is Juls' bike, drawn by ZuGo staff Karl Scmidt (he gave me the awesome Blue Hippo bike hat I wear, below).

Admittedly, ZuGo Bike is not fundamentally unique. You can buy an electric bike that looks very similar to Rhino, but Juls is satisfied. "What really sets us apart are two things," Jules explained.

"The first is the components we use. You can buy a bike that looks like ours, but it may not have hydraulic brakes or high-quality tires, and absolutely no our transmission. The second is our customer service. If you buy a bike in Asia, you may be alone in the event of a breakdown. ZuGo Bike provides a reliable 1-year warranty for our products."

If you have ever purchased a "big box" electric bicycle or ordered from a discount website, you will understand how big a deal this is.

The last thing to note about ZuGo Bike is that in addition to being more environmentally friendly than cars, the company also plants 10 trees for each purchase of ZuGo Bike Rhino. They also regularly hold competitions to promote their "green" careers. "We hope to protect the environment by making tree planting easy and at the same time giving you a chance to win a new ZuGo bike," Juls wrote on the website. "For every dollar donated, we will plant a tree, and you will have the opportunity to participate in our competition and have the chance to win a new ZuGo Rhino."

What do you think? Is planting a tree within reach, or is it a real effort to do something good? As a burner, I tend to give Juls enough trust and think it is the latter, but you can listen to the episode below of the Electric Expo Podcast hosted by me with her and CleanTechnica alumnus Chris Demorro, and let us know what you think Her brand is in the comments section at the bottom of the page. Warning: There are many names in this name, so wear a helmet. 😉
