A few years ago, my dad had a strange motorcycle in his yard. My brother replaced it with a broken off-road vehicle or something. It is a semi-fat mountain bike and a semi-retro striding bike, but it uses a motorcycle engine instead of pedals to power it. It looks like something you see in Asia or Africa, and it hasn’t been sold in the United States for decades.

After getting used to it in the driveway, I rode it around and thought it was cool. Trail 110 and Honda are written next to it. My brother and father found that it was more worthwhile than the previous owner knew, and the problem was not their speed, so they replaced it with something else.

What I didn't know at the time was that this weird scooter was the most popular motor vehicle of all time, usually called the Honda Super Cub (Honda Trail is the off-road version of this bike). It is true that the Toyota Corolla is the highest-selling car ever. Its total sales of all generations and global models are close to 40 million, but there are many people around the world who can’t afford or don’t want to spend cash on four-wheeled 3,000-pound vehicles. . In addition, you cannot park a Corolla in the stairwell of a 4-story apartment building in Taoyuan, nor can you park a Corolla in a narrow motorcycle space in Bogota. Cars are not always considered in the rest of the world.

Chassis motorcycles like Super Cub dominate global car sales because they are cheap (especially used cars), they are relatively easy to maintain, you don’t have to put a lot of oil in them, they fit almost anywhere, and despite the fact that the engine is very Small, but their performance is quite good. Following bicycles such as Super Cub are scooters, mopeds and many other small, light and cheap motorcycles. At crossroads in Asia, it is not uncommon for scooters to overtake cars by 2 or 3 for the same reason.

In the United States, motorcycles are more popular than ever before, but this record high makes American motorcycle ownership only 8%. Yes, this is not impressive at all. Here, motorcycles are considered dangerous to use on the road. If you ride a motorcycle in college, expect the whole family to tell you that when you have your first child, it’s time to hang up these keys because they" I don’t want to see your child grow up with a missing parent.” Riding in a place that does not share the road with a car is not dangerous, so many people still prefer to ride an off-road vehicle or drive a Harley in the countryside. But for daily transportation? no way! You will shoot out your eyes and be run over!

As explained by FortNine on YouTube, sales of electric motorcycles are stagnating, not just in the United States.

Like most manufacturers' early compliant car EVs, electric motorcycles performed well in cities, but they were not suitable for any type of out-of-city travel. Electric scooters face similar problems and are becoming more and more popular in China because scooters are usually only used for short trips. This is a natural match. American buyers just want an electric motorcycle to use in the dunes or woods (cross-country bikes), or the accountant and his other motorcycle gang lawyers and doctors for an epic trip on Highway 191, and the electric motorcycle No need. Don't do too hot in any of these tasks.

For electric cars, if you are willing to pay extra for this, there is enough space for extra batteries to get more than 300 miles of cruising range, but on motorcycles, there is not enough space on the highway to accommodate enough batteries.

Then there is cost. Even if it is brand new, Harley-Davidson's gasoline models start at less than $10,000, and its cheapest electric bikes start at $2,000 higher than the top gasoline models. For off-road vehicles, the Zero DS starts at more than $10,000, while the Yamaha Dual Sports starts at about $5,000 (this is the suggested retail price). Yamaha's fuel consumption is 76 MPG. I can't find the fuel capacity of the XT250 on their website because even 3 gallons of fuel is more than most people want when riding a bicycle. Alaskan adventure not crazy enough? Just bring a plastic bucket. Zero? It does not travel 100 miles, so if you take the highway to the beginning of the trail, be prepared to charge it before you reach the trail.

Few people are willing to pay twice as much for a car that cannot be half as cheap as a car.

Although Harley or Zero would like to distribute your money to you as soon as possible, most fools simply have no money. However, a few days ago, I saw someone walking faster than me on the "street" of the United States. This is not very unusual (I do have speed, but not that fast), but this guy is riding a scooter at a speed of over 40 MPH. I had to speed up a little bit and simply match his speed to see how fast he was.

It is not a big and wide scooter either. It looks similar to what you see rented by Lime or Bird, but it's much faster.

Battery technology has developed to the point where even small things like scooters can have powerful power, even if the range is not that large. For vehicles with more space, such as bicycles, there is more battery space. When it comes to electric bicycles, all states in the United States have not adopted the three-category system adopted by California. The top bicycles can reach 28 MPH, so the maximum speed and power vary from state to state. For off-road use, most state rules are not clear, or the rules do not apply at all, so it is not illegal to sell electric bicycles with a speed of 50 MPH.

I won’t name any names, but if you buy bikes with a power exceeding 1000 watts everywhere, you will find that they sometimes come with an "infinite" or "off-road" mode, and there is no limit to the speed of the bike. They will not tell you in the marketing. What is the actual maximum speed when you turn off all restrictions. As we all know, some of them are as powerful or more powerful as FortNine's custom electric motorcycles, while some have power comparable to ordinary motorcycles. On YouTube, you will see people commenting at more than 50 MPH per hour.

Of course, they have pedals and you can use pedals, but for some models, these pedals are obviously only for regulatory reasons or to make it less obvious to the police that you are riding a motorcycle without a license (provided you don’t have their speed).

What we really need to do is find a way to bridge the gap and make it easier for people to ride electric motorcycles legally without having to go through so many troubles. We also need to make it easier for companies to sell legal motorcycles without having to pretend it is a bicycle. If we don’t do this, we can expect their sales to continue to go unnoticed like this.
