E-bikes have become a big thing — particularly as they relate to the environment — which makes the new regional bike share subscription program sponsored by the San Gabriel Valley Council of Governments a big deal.

The organization, in association with ActiveSGV, will host a news conference Thursday in El Monte announcing its GoSGV program. The effort will allow residents to get a monthly subscription for electric-assist bicycles. The funds will come from a $4.5 million greenhouse gas-reduction grant from the California Transportation Commission.

Active San Gabriel Valley will run the daily operations. ActiveSGV is a community-based organization committed to more sustainable, equitable and livable conditions in the area.

There will be a total of 840 e-bikes in the mix — 828 will be single-person bikes, the other 12 will be cargo bikes.

This non-polluting transportation option will cost residents $69 per month for a single-person e-bike, $49 for students. The bigger cargo bike, which is equipped with child seat belts and has a 550-pound capacity, will be available for $129 per month for up to two months.

All bikes will be equipped with a lock and charging cable

El Monte Mayor Jessica Ancona touted the program.

“I am thrilled about the launch of GoSGV, a regional bike share program that offers San Gabriel Valley residents another affordable option for transportation,” she said. “Here in El Monte, we have been working to make our streets more bike friendly, along with reducing our carbon footprint. These e-bikes are a means of affordable, non-polluting transportation to reduce vehicle miles traveled and greenhouse gas emissions to help improve the environment here in our region.

“We are very fortunate to house ActiveSGV here in El Monte at the Jeff Seymour Family Center, which will now become the main hub for GoSGV. El Monte residents will now be able to subscribe monthly to have access to electric-assist bicycles.”

Maintenance partners will include local bike shops such as Around the Cycle in Pasadena, The Cub House in San Marino and Stan’s Bike Shop in Azusa.

Among the dignitaries expected at Thursday’s news conference at Jeff Seymour Family Center in El Monte are Mayor Ancona and Monrovia Mayor Becky Shevlin, who is also president of the San Gabriel Valley Council of Governments.
