Motorists are still getting a 'raw deal', says the RAC

The RAC has issued a warning to those filling up at major supermarkets. The motoring organisation claims that motorists are still getting a "raw deal" when it comes to getting petrol in their cars.

Despite the price of petrol greatly being reduced in recent months, the RAC says there is still things that can be done to help cash-strapped motorists. It has said that the prices are massively varying depending where you live.

Prices fell to 169p on average but due to the price of wholesale petrol, drivers should be paying around 161p, according to the RAC. Petrol dropped around 12p in average prices but a spokesperson said the fall in wholesale costs means this “only tells part of the story".

RAC spokesperson Rod Dennis said: "12p a litre is a lot to come off prices in a single month so there’s no doubt things could be worse, but in reality drivers of petrol vehicles are still getting a raw deal at the pumps.

"For whatever reason, major retailers are choosing not to pass on in full the reductions in the wholesale price of unleaded they’ve been benefiting from for some considerable time now – and this continues to mean drivers are often paying much more every time they fill up than they should."

But Dennis added that there is a "postcode lottery" in some areas of the UK with some drivers paying over the odds for fuel and said drivers should shop around. He added: "Drivers must shop around for the best deal they can, and we applaud those independent retailers who are doing their best to charge a fairer price for fuel and support their local communities through this incredibly expensive time."
