BROOKLYN, N.Y. — Brompton Bicycle Inc. on Thursday recalled more than 2,200 of its electric folding bicycles after at least two consumers were hospitalized with injuries following crashes caused by ill-positioned mudguards.

According to the recall, issued in partnership with the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission, the bike’s mudguard is positioned too close to the front wheel, which can cause the wheel to lock up and lead to “sudden deceleration of the bike if an object gets caught between the mudguard and front tire, posing crash and injury hazards to the rider.”

This recall involves Brompton Electric M2L, H2L, M6L and H6L models with 16-inch wheels.

Brooklyn, New York-based Brompton has fielded 10 reports to date of faulty mudguards causing the electric bicycles to crash, resulting in reports of nine injuries, including head and facial impact, broken bones, shoulder dislocation, bruising and chipped teeth. Two consumers required hospitalization, the company confirmed.

The affected models were sold at Brompton bicycle retailers, as well as online at https://us.brompton.com/, and on Brompton retailers’ websites from May 2019 through March 2022 for between $3,500 and $3,800 each.

Consumers are advised to immediately stop using the recalled bicycles and contact an authorized Brompton dealer for a free repair, which “replaces the front mudguard stay and flap and increases the clearance between the mudguard and tire,” the recall stated.

Consumer may reach Brompton by calling 1-800-578-6785 from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. CDT Monday to Friday; emailing support@Brompton.com; or online at https://us.brompton.com/recall.
